Statement of the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) on the “Human Rights Situation in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia” delivered on the Occasion of the 69th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights – held between November 15 and December 5, 2021.
I am honoured and humbled by the award from Germany. It definitely is a difficult time for Ethiopia, but the award is also a recognition of the efforts of institutions and human rights workers like me who are trying to work in a very difficult situation.
Ethiopian lawyer Daniel Bekele is being honored for his commitment towards defending human rights. The current head of the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission grew up in the midst of a brutal military dictatorship, and has vowed to speak out and fight back against injustice.
The report is an important step for accountability and justice for those affected.
The report covers the period from 3 November 2020, when the armed conflict began between the Ethiopian National Defence Force (ENDF), the Eritrean Defence Force (EDF), the Amhara Special Forces (ASF), the Amhara militia and Fano on one side, and the Tigrayan Special Forces (TSF), Tigrayan militia and other allied groups on the other, until 28 June 2021 when the Ethiopian Government declared a unilateral ceasefire.
