A delegation of Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) visited the National Human Rights Council of Morocco (CNDH). The visit, facilitated by the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) and CNDH, took place from December 18–22, 2023, at the Driss Benzekri Institute for Human Rights in Rabat. The visit aimed at fostering exchange of experiences and explore potential avenues for collaboration in areas of shared interest.
Experts from both institutions exchanged experiences and views on a wide range of human rights issues, including human rights monitoring, investigation, transitional justice, and international cooperation. Notably, experts from the CNDH provided insight into human rights protection within places of deprivation of liberty, safeguarding public freedoms, and observing trials. They also shared their experiences on the protection of the rights of migrants, rights of persons with disabilities, child rights, the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for data processing, and the National Preventive Mechanism against Torture (NPM).
CNDH also shared Morocco’s practical experience on the implementation of transitional justice, along with its role in the exercise, as well as its continued efforts in monitoring the implementation of recommendations forwarded by the Equity and Reconciliation Commission, focusing on the success, challenges, and unique features of the exercise. Additionally, building partnerships and cooperation with other national human rights institutions, regional and international partners, and human rights mechanisms within the United Nations and African Union were discussed during the meeting.
EHRC’s Director of the Office of the Chief Commissioner, Albab Tesfaye, emphasized the importance of collaboration and coordination between the two national human rights institutions in enhancing the capacity of the institutions to effectively discharge their mandates. The director also extended her appreciation to the Danish Institute for Human Rights for facilitating the visit and thanked the National Human Rights Council of Morocco (CNDH) for hosting the delegation and Moroccan hospitality.
