The House of Peoples’ Representatives appointed Ato Berhanu Adelo as the Chief Commissioner of the EHRC at its 17th regular session held on January 30, 2025. The Chief Commissioner appointment is conducted in accordance with Articles 10, 11 and 12 of the Establishment Proclamation No. 210/2000 (as amended by Proclamation 1224/2020).
The Chief Commissioner appointed by the House of Peoples’ Representatives, Ato Berhanu Adelo, has previously served in various government positions, including as Director General of the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office, as well as Minister in Charge of Cabinet Affairs. He was also a member of the Executive Committee of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF).
It is to be recalled that since July 2024, following the end of the term of Dr. Daniel Bekele, former Chief Commissioner, the EHRC was led by Rakeb Messele as the Acting Chief Commissioner, Dr. Abdi Jibril as Commissioner for Civil, Political, Economic and Social Rights, and Rigbe Gebrehawaria as Commissioner for Women, Children, Persons with Disabilities and Older Persons. Recalling that the current human rights situation in the country requires strong leadership and effective human rights work, Deputy Chief Commissioner wishes the new Chief Commissioner, Berhanu Adelo, a successful term on behalf of the Commissioners and colleagues of the EHRC.
