The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has launched a Gender Core Team on March 1, 2022 with the objective of revitalizing already ongoing initiatives of mainstreaming gender in key processes and systems.

The Working Group is an experience sharing platform that brings together National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD) member states
“Although our Commission will be missing one of its dedicated right hands, we are confident of Belain Gebremedhin’s invaluable contribution to the newly established institution both as a human rights expert and as an avid advocate for persons with disability and older persons.”
Misganaw says the commission will keep appealing to state authorities on the country’s pressing human rights issues but getting an appropriate response may not be immediate, he added.
“As of February 16, 2020, some 920 households are said to have reached Semera where they are seeking protection and humanitarian assistance."

Belain Gebremedhin, Director, Disability Rights and Rights of Older Persons Department, said “the session is part of a broader mainstreaming strategy that includes appointment of focal persons or, as we like to call them, ‘ambassadors’, in all of our departments”
UNICEF’s 2020 data shows that in Ethiopia, 25 million girls and women have undergone FGM, the largest absolute number in Eastern and Southern Africa.
