A team of Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) lead by its Commissioner for Disability and Older Persons Rights, Rigbe Gebrehawaria and the Commissioner for Civil, Political and Socio-Economic Rights, Dr. Abdi Jibril visited the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and other human rights institutions in South Africa from September 13 – 16, 2022.
SAHRC Chairperson Professor Bogani Christopher Majola welcomed the team and human rights experts from different departments of SAHRC presented the overall human rights situation in South Africa, program areas, outcomes and challenges encountered.
Commission for Gender Equality (CGE), Constitutional Court of South Africa, and Center for Human Rights at University of Pretoria are among the institutions visited. The team was later joined by EHRC’s Deputy Chief Commissioner, Rakeb Messele and continued its visit to the Legal Aid South Africa, Foundation for Human Rights and other Civil Society organizations (CSOs) engaged in advocacy and strategic litigation on different program areas.
Upon the team’s return Commissioner Dr. Abdi Jibril said, EHRC wishes to acknowledge the warm welcome the SAHRC reserved for the team and various South African human rights institutions. “The visit was a practical and effective tool to foster learning between the two organizations and benefited all participants through an open exchange of ideas, knowledge, experiences and best practices” he added.
