September 9th is celebrated as African Union Day to mark the adoption of the Sirte Declaration on 9.9.1999 which led to the establishment of the African Union- successor to the Organisation of African Unity.
On this African Union Day, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission reiterates the underlying principles of the African Union embodied in the African Union Constitutive Act which includes promoting gender equality and respect for democratic principles, human rights, the rule of law, and good governance.
“As a Member State and host country to the African Union, Ethiopia is bound by these principles and the objective of promoting and protecting human rights” stated Deputy Chief Commissioner, Rakeb Messele.
