The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) in collaboration with Project Expedite Justice (PEJ) conducted a capacity-building training on human rights monitoring and advocacy from March 23 to 26, 2026 in Adama. The training was organized for members of the EHRC-CSOs coordination regional platform and aimed to enhance the capacity of regional CSOs to effectively monitor and respond to human rights situations in conflict-affected areas. The training brought together 28 CSOs drawn from Afar, Amhara, and Tigray regions.

The training covered comprehensive topics, including the fundamental principles and ethics of human rights monitoring, monitoring methodologies and techniques for data and evidence collection, verification and documentation. The session also addressed international and national legal frameworks, the use of open-source information for relevant work, information authentication, as well as legal analysis and reporting. It was noted that these skills are essential for ensuring the credibility of monitoring findings and designing effective human rights advocacy strategies based on verified evidence.

It was stated that the training will strengthen the role of regional CSOs in identifying human rights concerns within their respective regions and working collaboratively on urgent matters by establishing early-warning systems, enhancing rapid response skills, and ensuring victims protection.

Manyawkal Mekonnen, EHRC’s Senior Director for Program and Partnership Department, called upon participating CSOs to translate the knowledge and skills gained into action by actively engaging in human rights protection and advocacy efforts.
