The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) extends its warmest congratulations to Dr. Abdi Jibril Ali, EHRC’s current thematic Commissioner for Civil, Political, Social and Economic Rights, on his election to the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR). Dr. Abdi, Ethiopia’s official candidate, was elected on April 8, 2026, in New York during a vote by States Parties to fill regional seats on the Committee. EHRC acknowledges that his election reflects both his distinguished expertise in human rights and Ethiopia’s continued engagement with international human rights mechanisms.
The CESCR is a body of 18 independent experts tasked with monitoring the implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) by States Parties. The Covenant enshrines economic, social and cultural rights such as the rights to adequate food, adequate housing, education, health, social security, water and sanitation, and work.
EHRC Chief Commissioner Berhanu Adello extended his congratulations to Dr. Abdi Jibril Ali on this important achievement, expressing strong confidence in his expertise, independence and commitment to advancing economic, social, and cultural rights at the international level. The Chief Commissioner further emphasized that this milestone reinforces Ethiopia’s and EHRC’s continued engagement with international human rights mechanisms, particularly UN treaty bodies. He underlined that EHRC will continue to actively contribute to the promotion, protection, and implementation of international human rights standards in Ethiopia, including through strengthened cooperation, reporting, and follow-up on recommendations, while wishing Dr. Abdi every success in the discharge of his new responsibilities.
