United Nations Principles for Older Persons, Principle 10
- Older Persons should be able to enjoy human rights and fundamental freedoms when residing in any shelter, care or treatment facility, including full respect for their dignity, beliefs, needs and privacy and for the right to make decisions about their care and quality of their lives.
Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Older Persons in Africa, Article 10 (2) & (3)
- States Parties shall:
- Identify, promote and strengthen traditional support systems to enhance the ability of families and communities to care for older family members; and
- Ensure the provision of preferential treatment in service deliver for Older Persons.
