The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is monitoring the aftermath of landslides, mudslides, and floods that occurred on March 10, 2026, across six different Kebeles in the Gacho Baba, Bonke, Kamba Zuria, and West Abaya Woredas of the Gamo Zone, South Ethiopia Region.
The Commission has confirmed that the disaster resulted in significant loss of lives, bodily injuries, and property damage. As of the issuance of this statement, a total of 65 deaths has been confirmed with remains recovered, while an additional 60 individuals remain missing and are presumed deceased. Furthermore, EHRC has verified that 3,461 individuals have been displaced from their homes and are currently facing a severe humanitarian crisis; alongside extensive property damage, including the total destruction of residential houses and farmlands.
It has been noted that the South Ethiopia Region and Gamo Zone Disaster Risk Management Task Force have identified solutions and established committees to urgently provide the supplies needed to rehabilitate the displaced. While EHRC urges the regional and zonal administrations to strengthen these positive steps, it calls upon federal and regional government institutions, as well as national and international organizations, to engage in an immediate and coordinated effort to ensure that food, water, medical care, and temporary shelter are provided without delay.
EHRC Chief Commissioner Birhanu Adelo expressed his profound sorrow over the damages caused by the disaster and urged that the disaster response be human rights-based, coordinated and swift; while ensuring it addresses the specific needs of vulnerable groups such as women, children, older persons and persons with disabilities. The Chief Commissioner further pointed out the need to work with special focus on disaster risk reduction and proactive prevention measures to mitigate the impacts of future natural disasters; and affirmed that EHRC will continue its monitoring and provide detailed recommendations to relevant authorities based on its findings.
