The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) conducted a two-day awareness-raising workshop on transitional justice concepts from May 19 to 20, 2026, in Addis Ababa.

The workshop featured presentations and discussions on Ethiopia’s Transitional Justice Policy (ETJP), the Transitional Justice Roadmap, draft laws prepared to facilitate the implementation of the TJ process, the role of national human rights institutions in TJ, and the activities being undertaken by EHRC in this regard.

During the discussions, participants reflected on the contribution of the core pillars of transitional justice, which include accountability, truth-seeking, reparations for victims, and institutional reforms, to justice, reconciliation and sustainable peace. The discussion further emphasized that clear implementation mechanisms, effective institutional coordination, and strong and independent institutions are critical in ensuring the effectiveness and credibility of the TJ process. It was also noted that the draft laws should be aligned with international human rights standards and principles and that the monitoring role of NHRIs in the implementation of TJ should be further strengthened.

At the end of the workshop, participants stated that the sessions had enhanced their understanding of Ethiopia’s TJ process and highlighted the importance of continued awareness-raising and capacity-building initiatives to strengthen the institutional capacity required to effectively support and monitor the TJ process.

EHRC reaffirmed that it will continue organizing similar capacity-building and awareness-raising programs and that it will continue carrying out monitoring and advisory activities aimed at ensuring the TJ process is effective, credible, and human rights-based.
