The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) held a consultative discussion in Hosanna with senior officials of the Central Ethiopia region on March 13, 2026. The discussion focused on human rights complaints received via its mobile complaint-handling centers between February 14 and March 6, 2026, across Enseno (East Gurage Zone), Wolkite (Gurage Zone), and surrounding districts.

During the discussion, it was noted that among the 323 total complaints received through EHRC’s mobile complaint centers, cases requiring urgent interventions have been addressed. Notable measures include the release of individuals who had been detained for an average of 11 to 25 days without court appearance, ensuring that suspects were brought before court of law and resolving grievances related to family visitation rights and medical services. Additionally, the session included an extensive discussion on the encouraging results achieved through EHRC’s advocacy and close collaboration with relevant authorities, as well as the challenges encountered.

Nurye Sule, Legal Affairs Advisor to the President of the Central Ethiopia Regional State, highlighted the positive outcomes achieved by the implementing the recommendations issued by the EHRC following its 2025 human rights monitoring in the region. Furthermore, he directed relevant officials to ensure the implementation of additional recommendations arising from this latest mobile complaint handling program.

Bagashew Eshetu, Regional Director of Human Rights Monitoring and Investigation at EHRC, stated that EHRC will continue to strengthen its mobile outreach to remain accessible to the community. He further urged the regional administration to intensify its efforts to improve the human rights situation by implementing EHRC’s recommendations and called upon all stakeholders to fulfill their responsibilities in ensuring the protection and respect of human rights.
