“On this day which marks the adoption of the Charter establishing the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on May 25, 1963, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, I wish to draw upon the words of the Charter itself and the freedom, equality, justice, and dignity they underscore to recall that these are essential objectives for the achievement of the legitimate aspirations of the people of Ethiopia, a founding member, and beyond, of the people of Africa.”
Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) Chief Commissioner Daniel Bekele said this on the occasion of Africa Day 2022; which this year is themed “Strengthening Resilience in Nutrition and Food Security on the African Continent: Strengthening Agro-Food Systems, Health and Social Protection Systems for the Acceleration of Human, Social and Economic Capital Development”.
