The number of persons with disabilities in Ethiopia are estimated to be at 17.6% of the total population. Ethiopia has ratified the United Nations (UN) Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The Marrakesh Treaty (or Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled) has also taken effect on February 2, 2021.
But Ethiopia is yet to ratify the African Union’s Protocol To The African Charter On Human And Peoples’ Rights On The Rights Of Persons With Disabilities In Africa.
Several accessibility, social and other barriers, including legislative and policy hurdles prevent this large segment of society from the full enjoyment of their rights.
As you join us to celebrate the International Day of Sign Languages marked each year on 23 September, help us spread our call for improved accessibility for persons with disabilities.
