The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) officially launched its Election Monitoring Situation Room for the 7th National Election on May 22, 2026. The launching event was attended by EHRC Commissioners, management, and experts, as well as representatives from GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit).

EHRC is explicitly mandated under its Establishment Proclamation (as amended) to monitor the state of human rights during elections. The Situation Room is equipped with the necessary tools and technology to assist in monitoring the adherence of the electoral process to human rights standards.

The Election Monitoring Situation Room was officially launched by EHRC Chief Commissioner Berhanu Adelo and the GIZ Country Director for Ethiopia and Djibouti, Dorothee Hutter.

The Situation Room facilitates efforts to provide timely remedies for human rights violations and pressing issues by ensuring the expedited exchange of information. The mechanism helps ensure that the electoral process complies with human rights in line with applicable laws and guidelines. It serves as a key tool towards preventing human rights violations while also playing a facilitative role in providing swift remedial actions through engagement with relevant stakeholders. Additionally, it facilitates the timely identification and resolution of security or technical challenges affecting human rights.

Dorothee Hutter, GIZ Country Director for Ethiopia and Djibouti, stated that the strengthening of EHRC’s human rights monitoring efforts is a significant achievement. Commending the special attention given to the election, she reaffirmed her organization’s commitment to further strengthening its partnership with the Commission.

EHRC Chief Commissioner Berhanu Adelo stated that the Election Monitoring Situation Room creates significant capacity in the effort to ensure the election is democratic, participatory, and human rights-compliant. He noted that the mechanism provides real-time information from monitoring experts deployed across various locations, thereby establishing an informed context for decision-making. He further expressed his gratitude to GIZ for its contribution toward developing such technological capabilities.
